Following the success of the 2020 event, the 2nd Special Session on Evolutionary Machine Learning (EML) of EvoApps will provide a specialized forum of discussion and exchange of information for researchers interested in exploring approaches that combine nature and nurture, with the long-term goal of evolving Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Giving response to the growing interest in the area, and consequent advances of the state-of-the-art, the special session covers theoretical and practical advances on the combination of Evolutionary Computation (EC) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: – EC as an ML technique: Using EC to solve typical ML tasks such as Classification or Clustering – EC applied ML algorithms: Neuroevolution, Feature Selection, Feature Engineering, Evolutionary Adversarial Models – ML applied to EC: Surrogate-model design by ML for EC, Learning Problem Structure, ML for Diversity, Designing Search Strategies, Predicting Promising Regions, Using ML to Decrease Computational Effort – Real world applications issues: EC for Fairness, Robustness, Trustworthiness and Explainability; Green EML – Emerging topics: EC for AutoML; EC for Transfer Learning; EC for Multitasking; Evolving Learning Functions, Neurons and Linkage; EC for Verification and Validation of ML
Important Dates Submission deadline: 19 November 2020 Evo*: 7-9 April 2021
Submission details: Submissions must be original and not published elsewhere. They will be peer reviewed by members of the program committee. The reviewing process will be double-blind, so please omit information about the authors in the submitted paper. Submit your manuscript in Springer LNCS format and provide up to five keywords in your Abstract.

Penousal Machado is Associate Professor at the Department of Informatics of the University of Coimbra in Portugal. He is a deputy director of the Centre for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra (CISUC), the coordinator of the Cognitive and Media Systems group and the scientific director of the Computational Design and Visualization Lab. of CISUC. His research interests include Evolutionary Computation, Computational Creativity, Artificial Intelligence and Information Visualization. He is the author of more than 200 refereed journal and conference papers in these areas, and his peer-reviewed publications have been nominated and awarded multiple times as best paper. Until May 2019 his publications gathered over 2262 citations, an h-index of 24, and an i10-index of 51. He was the advisor of 7 PhD thesis and 39 MSc thesis, and is currently advising 9 PhD and 3 MSc thesis.
He is also the chair of several scientific events, including, amongst the most recent, ICCC 2020, PPSN XV, and EvoStar 2016; member of the Programme Committee and Editorial Board of some of the main conferences and journals in these fields; member of the Steering Committee of EuroGP, EvoMUSART and Evostar; and executive board member of SPECIES.
He is the recipient of several scientific awards, including the prestigious EvoStar Award for outstanding Contribution to Evolutionary Computation in Europe, and the award for Excellence and Merit in Artificial Intelligence granted by the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence.
Penousal Machado has been invited to perform keynote speeches in a wide set of domains, from evolutionary computation to visualization and art. His work was featured in the Leonardo journal, Wired magazine and presented in venues such as the National Museum of Contemporary Art (Portugal) and the “Talk to me” exhibition of the Museum of Modern Art, NY (MoMA).

Hello,
If you have recently finished your PhD and are looking forward to pursuing a researcher career this may be of interest to you. An international tender to fulfil 2 Junior Researcher positions is open until the 20th of August 2020.
More formally, we are looking for a young PhD with stellar research track record and having been involved in R&D projects. The successful candidate should be able to integrate CISUC’s team, performing relevant research in one (or more) of its key research streams, namely: RISE — Resilient Software and Internet Systems; IS — Intelligent Systems and HCC — Human Centric Computing.
The stated position will be held under a public service employment contract with a length of three-years, which may be renewed for periods of one year up to a maximum of 6 years.
