The course aims at a set of objectives such as: sensitize participants about the importance of extracting knowledge from unstructured data, especially when the data volume is very large; provide knowledge of the main data analysis techniques using statistical software; formulate and solve problems, interpret results based on statistical tools, related to: forecasting models, reducing data complexity, classifying and grouping objects or variables; understand the concept of machine learning and select the most appropriate models for each problem and develop logical and deductive reasoning; increase critical spirit, develop analytical and creative ability.

The classes will be eminently theoretical-practical, privileging the exchange of ideas and discussion of the themes. A dataset will be used to work with the different data analysis techniques.

This course is an overview of machine learning methodologies and algorithms, applicable to various fields that serves as a foundation for participants to attend other advanced courses in a specific field. The course covers background knowledge about types of machine learning approaches, evaluation metrics, machine learning algorithms, software tools that may be used in several fields. Topics include theoretical concepts and practical aspects related to the application of machine learning tools to real problems. The course comprises theoretical sessions and practical sessions, in which attendees will have the opportunity to apply the various algorithms and techniques to several specific situations. Attendees will develop a project in which they will select and apply a set of machine learning tools to solve a proposed challenge.

Title: Perspectives from an unwilling data scientist

Abstract:
In this talk I will share my perspective on both basic concepts and practical aspects of getting information from data, aka data science practice. In terms of concepts I will address the subtleties of prediction, explanation and understanding, particularly in the context of time series. Based on my experience with environmental data and field campaigns, I will discuss data collection and data management features and its relevance in terms of rational use of resources and greener computing. I will also outline future opportunities and challenges in exploring the complementary nature of AI-based and physical-based modeling for the study of complex systems, such as the earth system. Finally I will discuss the postnormal stage of data science and its implications, particularly the need of transparent, open, and explainable data science.

Dois membros do DI/NOVA LINCS no top mundial

Foi recentemente publicado um estudo, liderado por John Ioannidis, professor da Universidade de Stanford, com uma lista dos cientistas mais citados a nível mundial, no topo 2% das respetivas áreas, que inclui 384 investigadores portugueses, dos quais 30 são da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.

Dessa lista fazem parte o Prof. Luís Moniz Pereira e o Prof. Luís Caires, ambos membros do Departamento de Informática e do NOVA LINCS.
O trabalho, agora divulgado, baseia-se em métricas de citação padronizadas mais precisas, com o propósito de combater os abusos de autocitação. O número de citações permite avaliar o impacto e influência consolidada de um determinado cientista ou instituição no progresso do conhecimento científico.
