About EASSS 2020

The 22nd European Agent Systems Summer School (EASSS 2020) will be organized by the Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science Lab of the University of Porto (LIACC), and held at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Portugal, on July 20-24, 2020. EASSS 2020 is organized under the auspices of the European Association for Multi-Agent Systems (EURAMAS) and the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence (APPIA), as an Advanced School on Artificial Intelligence.

The main goal of EASSS is to provide an exchange of knowledge among individuals and groups interested in various aspects of autonomous, agent-based and multi-agent systems research and practice. This dissemination is provided by formal state-of-the-art courses conducted by leading experts in the field and by informal meetings during the event. The school attracts both beginner and experienced researchers, encouraging cooperation between representatives of many branches of the Multi-Agent Systems research community.

The topics tackled within the field are becoming increasingly important due to the ubiquity of autonomous and distributed systems, such as the Internet of Things, intelligent buildings and smart cities, autonomous robots, agent-driven financial markets, etc. These kinds of applications demand innovative approaches in a number of research fields, including multi-agent systems engineering, coordination and cooperation, human-agent interaction, reasoning and planning, machine learning, game theory, modeling and simulation, and robotics. EASSS 2020 will be a privileged forum to learn the current trends in most of these fields, from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The courses will be taught by leading researchers in the field, and are aimed at Ph.D. students, advanced M.Sc. students, and other young researchers.

Since the initial edition of 1999 (Utrecht, Netherlands) the school has been held annually in different European locations. The previous edition took place in Maastricht, The Netherlands. The school usually attracts circa 50 students every year. A typical course is 4 hours long and provides a general introduction to the selected topic followed by an in-depth exposition of recent and relevant contributions.

********************

School format

EASSS will be composed of tutorial sessions, aiming at including both lectures and practical labs. We expect that at least some of the tutorials will be run as parallel sessions. In addition, EASSS will promote informal networking periods, where tutors and attendees (mostly early-stage researchers on agents and multi-agent systems) can exchange ideas. A social event will take place in the city of Porto.

Call-for-Tutorials

We invite proposals from members of the research community who are willing to offer tutorials at EASSS 2020. We are interested in tutorial proposals in all areas of current research in Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems. As a very rough guideline, any topic that might be covered at the AAMAS conference or in the JAAMAS journal would be suitable for EASSS.

We aim for a mix of tutorials on fundamental and well-established topics, as well as overviews of new and emerging areas of research. Tutorials should cover an appropriate selection of approaches and not mainly focus on the tutors’ own contributions. Besides providing a coherent overview of a specific research topic, we specifically encourage tutorial proposals to articulate a clear link to applications and pragmatic consideration of the fundamental topics presented. Tutorials that cover, in whole or in part, specific technological tools in the form of a hands-on session (e.g. for development of multi-agent systems, simulation of agent-based systems, or reinforcement learning), are also very welcome.

We encourage both well-established senior researchers and younger colleagues to submit proposals. Each tutorial is usually given by one or two people. Exceptions are of course possible; for proposals by more than two tutors, please justify this choice in the proposal and explain how you intend to ensure the coherence of the tutorial.

To support the tutors, we can commit to the provision of up to €500 per tutorial, to cover the tutorial team travel and accommodation costs.

Submission guidelines

A tutorial proposal should take the form of a 2-page PDF document covering the following points (preferably in this order):

  1. Title of the proposed tutorial.

  2. Tutor(s): name, affiliation, contact details (email), and a link to the personal homepage of each tutor.

  3. Abstract: a short paragraph describing the tutorial (100-300 words), suitable for publication at the EASSS 2020 website.

  4. Short biographical sketch for each tutor (around 100 words per tutor), suitable for publication at the EASSS 2020 website.

  5. Experience of the tutor(s): any details on the relevant teaching experience of the tutor(s).

  6. Syllabus: a detailed list of topics covered in the tutorial, preferably in the order in which the tutorial will cover them.

  7. Type: a clear indication of whether the tutorial takes a theoretical or applications-oriented perspective on the topics covered. We encourage tutorial proposals that balance the two perspectives.

  8. Prerequisites: the target audience or prior knowledge the attendants are assumed to have.

  9. Teaching materials: the kind of teaching materials you intend to provide. These will be needed by the organization on the date stated below.

  10. Duration: typically around 3,5h (half-day). Please explain if you need more time (e.g. for having a hands-on practical session).

  11. Equipment: any special equipment (beyond a beamer and a whiteboard) that you might need.

The proposals should be submitted to EasyChair: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=easss2020

Any inquiries should be sent to easss2020@fe.up.pt

[rede.APPIA] EPIA 2020 – CALL FOR THEMATIC TRACKS

************************************************ CALL FOR THEMATIC TRACKS ************************************************** EPIA 2020 20th EPIA Conference on Artificial Intelligence epia2020.inesc-id.pt September 7-9, 2020 Lisboa – Portugal
************************************************** The EPIA Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a well-established European conference in the field of AI. The 20th edition, EPIA 2020, will take place at Lisbon in September 7th-9th, 2020. As in previous editions, this international conference is hosted with the patronage of the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence (APPIA). The purpose of this conference is to promote research in all areas of AI, covering both theoretical/foundational issues and applications, and the scientific exchange among researchers, engineers and practitioners in related disciplines.
******************** Conference format ******************** To promote discussions among participants, the scientific program of EPIA 2020 will be composed of a set of thematic tracks. In addition to the parallel sessions for the different tracks, there will be plenary sessions with invited lectures given by leading scientists, tutorials focusing on specific subjects of AI and demonstrations.
More detailed and up-to-date information may be found at: epia2020.inesc-id.pt

********************* Call-for-tracks ********************* The worldwide AI research community is invited to submit thematic track proposals for EPIA 2020. Thematic tracks are intended to provide an environment that fosters an active exchange of ideas between researchers within specific sub-areas of AI, including theoretical/foundational, integrative, application-oriented and newly emerging areas. Each track is coordinated by an Organizing Committee composed of, at least, researchers from two different countries. Track organizers should also create a highly international Program Committee for the track, with recognized researchers within the corresponding scientific areas. The selection of proposed thematic tracks will be made by the Program Chairs and Steering Committee of EPIA 2020. We aim to build a strong, well-balanced conference program. If there are significant thematic gaps in the program after the track proposal submission closes, the chairs may actively solicit additional proposals. Likewise, significant overlap between tracks will be addressed by suggesting merging tracks. Papers accepted in thematic tracks will be published by Springer, in a volume of the Lecture Notes on Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series. Submitted papers should be prepared according to the corresponding format, with a maximum of 12 pages. Presentation slots will be accommodated in the conference program for every accepted paper, in thematic sessions that may run in parallel.
******************** Responsibilities ******************** The Organizing Committee of each track will be responsible for: – Creating an international Program Committee for the track. – Publicizing the track by all necessary means, including distributing the call-for-papers of EPIA 2020. – Coordinating a double-blind review process for papers submitted to the track, ensuring that each paper is reviewed by at least three program committee members. – Assisting the Program Chairs of the conference in the paper selection process. – Ensuring the delivery of camera-ready versions of papers accepted for the track in accordance with the guidelines and deadlines defined by the conference organizers. – Coordinating track session chairing assignments.
The organizers of EPIA 2020 will ensure: – A web-based tool to support the scientific organization process (paper submission, reviewing, selection, etc.). – The coordination and final deliberation on paper acceptance decisions. – The publication of thematic track papers in the conference proceedings. – A meeting place and time for holding the track sessions, including common equipment (e.g. computer and beamer). EPIA 2020 organizers reserve the right to cancel a track if deadlines are missed, or if the track organizers are unable to attract a minimum number of quality paper submissions. If that is the case, track session merges may also be imposed.
******************** Proposal submission ******************** Track proposals should not exceed 3 pages and must be submitted as a PDF file, at the conference submission system: easychair.org/conferences/?conf=epia2020 The proposal should contain the following information: 1. Thematic track title. 2. Name, affiliation, postal address, phone and email address of all members of the track Organizing Committee, which must include researchers from institutions in at least two different countries. 3. Identification of the Organizing Committee contact person. 4. A brief description of the specific scientific/technical scope of the track 5. A list of topics of interest. 6. The reasons why the track should be held within EPIA 2020. 7.     7th Computational Creativity Symposium at AISB 2020
The Society for the Study of Artificial Intelligence and Simulation of Behaviour (AISB) is the largest Artificial Intelligence Society in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1964, the AISB is the world’s oldest AI society and continues to attract an international membership drawn from both academia and industry. It is a member of the European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence.

AISB 2020 is the annual convention of the Society for the Study of Artificial Intelligence and Simulation of Behaviour. The convention will consist of parallel symposia and will run from April 6th to April 9th 2020.

The 7th Computational Creativity Symposium at AISB will feature a number of presentations covering a range of topics in the evolving field of Computational Creativity. Issues addressed included practical work in the area, theoretical approaches to creativity, and philosophical questions raised on the potential of non-human creative agents. This year we shall also run a Show-and-Tell demo session as well as the paper presentations.

    Computational Creativity
Over the last few decades, computational creativity has attracted an increasing number of researchers from both arts and science backgrounds, from academia and industry. Philosophers, cognitive psychologists, computer scientists and artists have all contributed to and enriched this area of research.

Many argue a machine is creative if it simulates or replicates human creativity (e.g. evaluation of AI systems via a Turing-style test), while others have conceived of computational creativity as an inherently different discipline, where computer-generated (art)work should not be judged on the same terms, i.e. as being necessarily producible by a human artist, or having similar attributes, etc.

This symposium aims at bringing together researchers to discuss recent technical and philosophical developments in the field, and the impact of this research on the future of our relationship with computers and the way we perceive them: at the individual level where we interact with the machines, the social level where we interact with each other via computers, or even with machines interacting with each other.

*New this year* we shall have two types of submissions for the symposium: a call for full papers, and a call for demos of creative software for a Show-and-Tell session within the symposium.

On the day of the symposium, we will have a combination of paper presentations and a Show-and-Tell-style demo session of creative systems. You are invited to submit either a full research paper for a paper presentation (up to 8 pages) or an extended abstract for a slot in the Show-and-Tell session (up to 2 pages) focusing on demoing your creative system’s functionality. You are welcome to submit to both tracks. We encourage the submission of work in progress as well as more mature work.

Authors of accepted papers will be expected to give 30-minute presentations, including 5 to 10 minutes for questions, on the day of the symposium. Authors of accepted demo abstracts will be expected to participate in the Show and Tell session, demoing their creative system and allowing time for questions. We are considering the publication of a selection of extended and re-reviewed papers from the symposium in a journal special issue. More details will follow!

We would like to highlight that this year we have added a Show-and-tell Demo session. Although papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference, demo abstracts submitted to this part of the AISB call can be about systems reported in papers submitted elsewhere. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

    List of Topics
– Novel systems and theories in computational creativity, in any domain, e.g. drawing and painting, music, storytelling, poetry, games.
– The evaluation of computational creative systems, processes and artifacts.
– Theory of computational aesthetics.
– Representational issues in creativity, including visual and perceptual representations.
– Social aspects of computational creativity, and intellectual property issues.
– Creative autonomy and constraint.
– Computational appreciation of artifacts, including human artwork.
